Yascha Mounk in Der Tagesspiegel

On May 30, 2017, Der Tagesspiegel published an op-ed by Transatlantic Academy Fellow Yascha Mounk, entitled "Trump und Europa - Annäherung durch Wandel" (Rapprochement through Change).

"From the founding of the Bundesrepublik, German foreign policy has rested on two foundational assumptions," Mounk writes. "Firstly, that it was in the urgent strategic interest of the United States to protect Germany; West Germany could therefore 'outsource' a major part of its own defense. Secondly, the United States was committed to the preservation of democratic values; a close alliance with America seemed imperative for convinced democrats on moral grounds. Through the election of Donald Trump, both assumptions have become untenable for the first time since 1949."

Mounk argues that without increased defense spending and capabilities, Germany will remain dependent on the United States or be tempted to curry favor with the dictators to its east.
