Tim Boersma interviewed on Swiss National Public Radio
On January 5, 2012 Transatlantic Academy Fellow Tim Boersma was interviewed by Fredy Gsteiger of Swiss National Public Radio. The interview was in response to the recent Transatlantic Take piece "The Great White Hype: Is Geopolitical Competition over the Arctic Exaggerated?” which was distributed by the German Marshall Fund on January 4.
There has been talk of a "storming of the Arctic”, some even suggest that there is a "Cold War at the North Pole”. The reasoning sounds plausible: The melting of the ice has granted access to new trade routes and raw materials. The political tug of war and the military saber-rattling in the Arctic has therefore become a fact. But the renowned think tank “German Marshall Fund" now draws a different conclusion: The economic potential of the Arctic could turn out to be an illusion or at least heavily exaggerated.
