The End of American World Order

On September 24, 2014 the Transatlantic Academy hosted a book launch for The End of American World Order, the latest work by Amitav Acharya, UNESCO chair in transnational challenges and governance and chair of the ASEAN Studies Center at American University’s School of International Service. Acharya argued that the age of Western hegemony is over; that whether or not the United States itself is declining, the post-war liberal world order, underpinned by its military, economic, and ideological primacy and supported by global institutions serving its power and purpose, is coming to an end. The United States will be one of a number of anchors including emerging powers, regional forces, and a concert of the old and new powers shaping a new world order.

Acharya presented his work and Michael Barnett, senior fellow at the Transatlantic Academy and university professor of international affairs and political science at the George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs, offered comments.
